u3a Members Contribute to National Conversation on Data Sharing

Over 40 u3a members from across the East Midlands Region took part in a lively and thought-provoking Data Debate, organised by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in partnership with the Third Age Trust.

Fiona Dawe, Chief Social Researcher at the ONS and Deputy Director of the Centre for Equalities and Inclusion, opened the event by outlining its two key aims: to better understand public attitudes toward data sharing, and to raise awareness of the vital statistics the ONS collects and publishes.

Participants then broke into smaller focus groups, each facilitated by an ONS staff member. These confidential discussions provided space for members to share their views and concerns freely.

In the closing plenary session, Fiona reflected on the common themes that had emerged across groups, including the importance of transparencyrobust data security, and clear information about how data is shared and linked.

The event offered a valuable opportunity for u3a members to contribute meaningfully to a national conversation about data collection and use, trust, and public engagement.
